Planned Route
Initially I wanted to drive from London to Cape Town. After some real in-depth
work on the topic I realized two things:
I was taking on a pretty risky route since I wanted to travel through Western Africa (Morocco -> Mauritania -> down to Benin -> Nigeria/Cameroun -> Congo/RDC -> Angola and Namibia)
I was combining travel risk with execution risk
(mechanical problems, people concerns, etc.) given that I was on my own and
had not been reacquainted with extreme survival or travel
As a result, I considered it wise to go for a "trial run" somewhere first before crossing Africa. While Eastern Europe and Asia seemed attractive, the Olympic games in China and the instability in Pakistan (combined with my difficult experience in Russia last summer) led me to conclude that Australia could be a good place to start. Since I had never actually travelled to Australia, but had always imagined it as some sort of paradise with its Barrier Reef, huge empty Outback and overall relaxed bunch of people. The plan was set...
